Game Mechanics
Roulette has always been a crowd favourite in both physical and online casinos. It is a fairly easy game that relies on a ball and a wheel to decide your fate and your fortune — literally!
As the roulette wheel is spun, the croupier rolls a ball into it. The ball gradually stops spinning and drops onto pockets placed on the bottom of the wheel. You can bet on which pocket you think the ball will fall into!
To explain further, the game of roulette pretty much relies on these major parts.
The Ball
In physical casinos, the roulette ball size varies from 3/8 inch, 7/16 inch, 1/2 inch, 5/8 and 3/4 inches. Most casinos of today use the 3/4 and 5/8 roulette balls.
Traditionally, these balls were made from ivory. However, some casinos have opted to use those made from Teflon plastic instead. The ivorine balls are coloured pale yellow while the Teflon is most of the time, white.
A notable difference is in the way the balls bounce and behave. An ivorine ball is bouncier than the regular Teflon ball and thus, much harder to predict by some gamblers who’d like to observe the ball. However, Teflon balls are made to be less precise than ivorine balls. If you are one of those kinds of gamblers, the behaviour of one Teflon ball may not be helpful to your next spin if another ball was used.
The ball is not everything there is to a roulette game. After all, the behaviour of one ball cannot be fully applied to other balls. This is just one factor that some gamblers consider when choosing their roulette table and placing bets.
The Wheel
The wheel is a structure with two parts. The ball track or sometimes the backtrack is the stationary part of the wheel where the ball is initially spun. Then it falls into a rotating wheel containing the pockets. Aside from the rotating wheel, all the other parts of the Roulette table must remain stationary.
There are certain characteristics of a fair Roulette table. The wheel should be on a plane surface with its weight evenly spread out to avoid tilting or any unnecessary action. Each pocket must be of equal sizes and has a surface that allows the ball to land freely.
The rotating wheel is a numbered and coloured device. It has the colours green, black and red. The original wheel of the 18th century only had two colours. The green was only introduced to avoid confusion and is only for numbers 0 and 00.
It can have a total of 37 or 38 numbered pockets depending on what wheel it is. Rather than a random placement, numbered pockets are placed in certain patterns. Players bet on the grouping such as colour or the specific number of the pocket the ball will find itself in.
There are two different Roulette wheels in the gambling scene. Since the game highly depends on this wheel, there is a great deal of logic and history behind the making of each one. The two of them — the American and European Wheel — are very different from each other.
Traditionally, roulette wheels had the American Wheel layout. One of the main differences is that there are two house pockets in this wheel. House pockets are spaces reserved for the casino that no player can normally bet on. This means that the zeros represent the house edge of a roulette table.
Having two house pockets, the total number of pockets an American wheel has is 38. Other pockets are numbered 1 to 36 with consecutive numbers placed opposite each other in the wheel. The two house pockets are also separated from each other. In a clockwise manner, the American wheel’s pockets are: 0, 28, 9, 26, 30, 11, 7, 20, 32, 17, 5, 22, 34, 15, 3, 24, 36, 13, 1, 00, 27, 10, 25, 29, 12, 8, 19, 31, 18, 6, 21, 33, 16, 4, 23, 35, 14, 2
The American Wheel that gives the casino a 5.26% advantage is still used in most parts of America.
It was a new variation of the wheel that the Monte Carlo Casino made famous in the 1850s and 1860s. With just a single zero (0) for its house pocket, the European Wheel gave its punters better odds than the American Wheel.
The key difference of the European Wheel from the earlier wheel is its 37 pockets and an almost halved house advantage at about 2.7%. The numbering of pockets is also different from the American Wheel. In a clockwise motion, the European wheel pockets are 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25, 17, 34, 6, 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33, 1, 20, 14, 31, 9, 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26
If the European wheel is divided into two from the zero, you can see that the red low (1-18) numbers and black high (16-36) numbers are on one half. Although somehow present in the American wheel, low and high numbers are not placed adjacent to each other in the European Wheel. Its only exception is the 5,10 neighbours.
The even and odd numbers are also scattered away from each other. This makes the European wheel a more balanced version of the two.
The table
The Roulette table is made to be able to carry the weight of the wheel. As some form of action may tilt or in any way affect the spinning of the wheel and may disrupt the game, the betting table is most of the time placed on a different flat surface.
There are three kinds of betting tables used in today’s roulette. These are the American, European and French Roulette. The initial difference of the American table from the other two is that its layout follows the American wheel with an extra box for the 00 pocket. The only difference of the French Table from the European is that it uses French terms in its layout.
The betting table has a specific placement of the numbers in the wheel. This is where the bets according to certain patterns or groupings are placed. It is divided into two major distinctions.
Inside betting options
These are bets on the innermost of the table layout and thus, called inside bets.
These are bets placed on specific numbers. These have a lower probability of winning against the house but has bigger payouts.
Straight-up bet
This is betting on a particular number only. With a very low probability of scoring on that specific pocket, this bet has a huge payout of 35:1.
Split bet
The players place their chips between two neighbouring numbers in the betting table. This has a slightly higher probability than that of a straight bet with 17:1 odds.
Line bets/street bets
The chips are placed in the vertical line separating the inside and outside bets. This means that a trio of numbers is betted on with 11:1 odds.
Corner bet/quad bet
Chips are placed in the corner of four numbers to bet on. This has the odds of 8:1.
Double street bet
Similar to the placement of line and street bets, the chips are also placed in the corner of two rows. Betting on six specific numbers, it has the odds of 5:1.
There are a lot of strategies imploring the use of inside bets. Some people also try betting on multiple straight-up bets or other inside bets to have better odds.
Some people bet straight on selected numbers for a number of spins (35 spins at most) or before they go on an unprofitable losing streak. Some bet on combinations of inside bets to maximize the odds of bets placed on the wheel.
Outside betting options
When you are new to betting and you can settle for smaller yet much probable winnings, you can bet on the outer part of the betting table. This contains betting options based on the grouping of numbers.
As each option takes up a considerable part of the roulette, there are higher odds that the ball may drop in these sections.
Red or Black / Odd or Even
These may have the biggest odds in the came at 1:1. You can bet on what colour is the pocket that the ball will land on. You can also bet whether the numbered pocket will be an odd or even number.
High or Low
With the same odds as the Colour or Odd or Even groupings, a player can bet on whether the pocket will have a high number or a low number. Low numbers refer to 1 until 18 and high numbers refer to the next numbers, 19 to 36.
Dozens bet
This bets on a third of the roulette wheel. They are divided into consecutive numbers 1-12, 13-24, and 25-36. This has 2:1 odds.
Column bet
This has the same probability as the dozens bet at 2:1. This bets on non-consecutive numbers that can be found on the betting table layout.
Special Bets
Announced bets make a special kind of betting that is not dependent on the table, but on the wheel. These are available on the French table, and sometimes on a European Table. This also enables bettors to bet on the house pockets.
A French Table is a variant of Roulette that cannot be typically found in most physical casinos but is offered in online casinos. You can play either video and a live game of the French Roulette at Bitcasino!
The following bets are special bets that you can only wager on certain tables.
- Neighbours of Zero – 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25
- Thirds of the Wheel – 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33
- Zero Game – 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15

- Basket: 0,00,1,2,3
Special Rules
The following are special rules that do not apply to most casinos. However, these rules add to the advantage of the player against the house. This is because these special rules apply to the house pocket.
La Partage – This is only usable when a player bets on groupings with 1:1 odds including the red/black, odd/even, and high/low bets. When a stake is placed on these bets and rule is in play, the ball landing on the zero (0) would return half of the player’s stake.
En Prison – Similarly to the La Partage grouping, rolling the ball in the zero (0) pocket will not result to forfeiting the round. The stakes will be put ‘in prison’ or is put as a stake for the next round.
Surrender – The Surrender rule, unlike the earlier two, is used in American Roulette. It is basically the same as La Partage. The only difference is that there are two zeros (0,00) in the American Well.

Betting Management
We know that betting can give you a different kind of high. Winning a bet or even merely placing a bet can give a gambler the thrill he may be looking for.
However, you should see to it that your bankroll lasts until you’ve had your fill of the thrill!
These are some tips that we can give you.
Manage your bankroll carefully
The bankroll is the money you can spend in gambling. This can refer to the total money you are willing to spend on one game or at one casino. Professional gamblers have already set a fixed amount of money that will be put on games. This should be set aside from other budgets.
There are many ways of managing your funds. One way to manage your money regardless if it is big or small is to start with small safe bets. This will give you ample money if you win. If you lose, the impact on your bankroll will not be too big.
Be mindful of your betting ratio. This is the amount of money in your bankroll versus the money you normally stake on games. If you bet small amounts of money, you can go far with a small bankroll. But if you love to stake large sums of money, you should have a bigger bankroll that can support this betting pattern.
Set your Limits
The thrill is highly addicting. That is why we should set limits when we gamble our money.
This should be done especially if you are in a losing streak. If you get unlucky, don’t stress yourself bent on winning. At the end of the day, the casino games are all games of chances. You win and you lose.
You should first build up your bankroll before going back for a spin. And when you have already passed the set limit on your bankroll you can always stop. This way you can minimize your losses rather than going into an endless spiral you can’t pull yourself out of.
Use a strategy
Gambling can be a mind game.
There are a lot of strategies and theories that professional gamblers employ to maximize their winnings. Some of our favourites are not those promising you’d win them all. They are those that ensure that though there are losses, you can profit in the long run.
One of them is the Martingale approach. The Martingale betting method requires you to double your stakes after every loss. This will make sure that if ever you win, all your losses will be dismissed. Logically and theoretically, it works and is beneficial in the long run.
Rather than flaws, there are conditions to consider in using this system. You should have a big enough bankroll to carry through this plan. Since if you stop halfway, this would only result in a very big loss.
Have a good money arrangement
Well, we have gone first with the idea of losing so that we can enjoy talking about what could happen if you won.
It is very easy to continue betting when you are on a winning streak. Regardless of how fun, you should also learn to put a limit on your winnings. This is so you can avoid more losses. When you lose after a winning streak, it would be very easy to become desperate to win back your earnings.
If you learn to stop while you are on top of your game, you would be saved from when you start losing again. After all, you are never sure of your luck in a game of chances!
When you hit the jackpot one time, it can be much safer if you walk away with prizes still in your hand.

Betting Methods
All-In
Although highly discouraged, betting all your bankroll in one go is one move that guarantees the biggest returns! But, the joke is it literally is one move. Once you lose the bet, you gotta earn that money again.
One extreme all or nothing bet that paid off was in a Roulette game. Ashley Revell sold all his belongings and garnered extra funds before betting. He also changed his name to Ashley Blue Square Revell in appreciation to a bookmaker who donated funds.
He staked his 135,300 USD on red. Lady Luck must have kissed him on the cheek as the ball ended on number 7, a red. He doubled his earnings to 270,600 USD.
Fixed Wager
A fixed wager will require you to bet a constant amount of money regardless of how much you win or lose. These actions will not completely deplete your bankroll. And you’ll have more opportunities to win.
Although this will really take time, this guarantees a slow and steady win.
Martingale Strategy
The Martingale strategy requires you to double your stakes after each loss. This is so that in case of a win, you’ll get all your losses back plus a profit. As the losses continue to pile up, however, you will need to pay large sums of money to save yourself.
There is another strategy made in contrast to this. In the Reverse Martingale, players increase their bets after a win and decrease after a loss. But since all rounds or spins of casino games are independent, this will fail to make additional money.
The Martingale strategy can turn the unlucky losing streak to a positive. Pray that you get lucky at least one time to get your money back!
Fibonacci Sequence
Fibonacci Strategy follows the same logic as the Martingale system where you increase your bet after a loss. However, this does not mean that you have to double your stake.
In this strategy, you are meant to follow the Fibonacci Sequence which is 1, 1, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34 and so on. That means that after two losses you triple your stakes, and then multiply it five (5) times at the next loss. This strategy also implies that you should lower your stake two times on the sequence after a win.
If you are profiting using this system, you can now go back to the start to maximize the effect.
The Fibonacci Strategy like the Martingale assures that you have higher stakes when you are in a losing streak so that when you win, you can have bigger earnings.
Proportional Betting
In proportional betting, you bet a part of your bankroll according to the odds of your bet.
For example, with 5:1 odds and a 100 USD bankroll. Therefore you should be betting 5% of your 100 USD Bankroll as well. If you win, your bankroll will be about 150. You can then bet another 5% of your bankroll on the next spin.
This means that your bets are affected greatly by your bankroll and the odds. Unlike the fixed bets, your winnings will increase at a faster rate and you lower your stake when you lose.
Around the World for Centuries
- The Roulette Wheel was said to have been born from an experiment by Blaise Pascal for a perpetual motion machine or a machine that functions continuously without energy. Now, gamblers can’t wait for these wheels to stop!
- A french novel first describes the American Wheel in the Palais Royal in 1796. As such, the American Wheel did not actually come from America.
- House pockets were coloured green to avoid confusion but were originally either red or black.
- Frenchmen Francois and Louis Blanc introduced the European Wheel at a casino town in Germany in 1843. They got more players due to the lower house advantage.
- The Blanc siblings moved to Europe when gambling was banned in Germany. The Monte Carlo Casino is now what it is because of them and the European Wheel.
- The Blanc siblings’ success were attributed to the devil. That’s why there is a misconception to the sum of the roulette numbers being 666.
- The Monte Carlo Casino has the most number of Roulette tables in the world with more than a hundred. However, they do not use all the tables simultaneously. The Venetian in Macau actually uses more tables than them on a regular basis.
- Opposite to how the European Wheel was made, an earlier version of the American Wheel was made with an American Eagle slot. Regardless of all the details of the American liberty symbol, the pocket was in essence just a third house pocket.
- In the American Eagle version of the wheel, you can bet on the house pockets. The house also pays back these bettors.
- There was frequent cheating by both gamblers and casino operators by leaning or rigging Roulette tables. This caused the wheel to be placed on top of a different table and the betting board layout to be made.
- It is only in the United States of America that the American Wheel has stayed predominant. Most of the world uses the European Wheel as it gives the players a better advantage over the house.
